Burch and Blackburn to lead swimming team

Lisa Blackburn

An eight men and eight women squad will represent Bermuda at the upcoming NatWest Island Games in swimming. The team, which consists of a mix of youth and experience, will see Olympian Roy-Allan Burch return home to compete in the recently opened National Aquatics Centre (NAC).Also included in the team is veteran Lisa Blackburn.Jesse Washington and Maddie Moore are two of Bermuda’s up-and-coming swimmers who performed impressively at the recent Carifta Championships.National coach Ben Smith said he was pleased with the squad selected and was anxious to see how the younger swimmers fare against international opposition.“Our older athletes are based abroad ... where there is more of a depth of fast swimmers. This competition is great for the younger swimmers to learn from them in how they deal with a meet like this.“A lot of them will be competing against swimmers older than them. Maddie, Jesse and Shannon (Hassell) are 13 and 14 so it’s a great opportunity for them to learn, especially with big meets next year including the Youth Olympics where a lot of the swimmers they compete against will be older.”Smith is also happy to see Burch back on local shores.“It is also special when you have athletes returning home. Roy-Allan loves to come back and compete so hopefully he performs well and shows everyone why he is considered Bermuda’s best.”Racing will be scheduled in the morning and late afternoon to keep athletes out of the mid-day sun.Water temperature will be regulated according to the guidelines set out by FINA, world governing body.
