Trunk Island record slashed by Hurst

Ky Hurst, the former Olympian who is now a member of Oracle Team USA, smashed the record for the Trunk Island Swim on Sunday.

Hurst, who joined the America’s Cup team last year, covered the distance in 15min 28sec, more than a minute faster than the previous best time of 16:53 set by Jesse Washington in 2013.

Eileen Mullowney was second in 18:59, some way short of Emma Harvey’s women’s record of 17:57, which she set last year.

Neither Harvey nor Washington, who will compete at the Caribbean Island Championships this week, swam at the weekend.

Nick Rowse finished third out of the 95 swimmers that completed the race, while seven competitors were disqualified.
