Watson-Brown breaks personal best in Calgary

The Bermuda swimming team of Logan Watson-Brown, Jack Harvey and Brian Desmond got off to a slow start on the first day of competition at the Canadian Junior Championships in Calgary. Adapting to an altitude of 3,500 feet took its toll, as the swimmers struggled to perform in their events.

However, yesterday, in the heats of the 100 metres freestyle for 15-17 girls, Watson-Brown shook off any concerns about competing at altitude, as she qualified for the “A” final in sixth place with a time of 58.54sec.

She returned to the pool in the evening and finished in fourth place with a personal-best time of 57.83. The quality of the field in this event is underlined, as the winner, Kyla Leibel, will be representing Canada at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.

Jack Harvey, competing in the 100 backstroke event for 16—18 boys, swam a time of 1min 1.92sec, which was within six tenths of a second of his personal best, to finish 21st in a field of 31 swimmers.

After a rest day today, the Bermuda swimmers return to competition tomorrow, with Watson-Brown and Desmond racing over 200 metres freestyle.
