Elan Daley announces intention to swim for Bermuda again

Top swimmer Elan Daley has announced her intention to return to international competition with Bermuda.

Daley, who switched allegiance to Canada in 2021, has been provisionally selected to compete for Bermuda at the Central American and Caribbean Games, which take place in Dominican Republic in July.

It is understood by The Royal Gazette that the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association and Daley have submitted the relevant documentation to World Aquatics, the sport’s governing body, and are waiting for approval.

Ben Smith, national swimming coach, is delighted that Daley, 21, will be back in the Bermuda fold.

“It’s really exciting that Elan will be swimming for Bermuda again,” Smith said.

“The paperwork process is still happening, so it isn’t fully finalised, but we’re hoping in the next couple of weeks for sure we'll know that.

“She’s been entered for CAC Games and it will be exciting to have both her and her brother [Elijah] there.”

Daley was one of Bermuda’s brightest swimming prospects, winning Female Junior Athlete of the Year after a medal-laden 2019.

She claimed three gold medals at the CAC Championships in Bridgetown, Barbados, and nine medals, including four gold, at the Carifta Championships, also held in Barbados.

That year, Daley also broke her Bermuda record in the 200 metres freestyle by placing second in her heat at the world championships in Gwangju, South Korea, where she was the youngest competitor at the age of 14.
