Bermuda swimming squad return home with relay medals

Medal winners: Jorgia White, Athena Dyer, Logan Jones, Dominic Wright, Elanna Fulton, Gabriel Maranzana, Noah Maranzana and Katherine Wheddon

Bermuda’s national swimming team are returning home from North Carolina with a couple of medals and a string of fine performances to remember.

Both medals came in the same final with Elanna Fulton, Katherine Wheddon and Maranzana siblings Gabe and Noah Maranzana forming the winning team in the 13 & over Mixed 200 metres freestyle relay. Logan Jones, Athena Dyer, Jorgia White and Dominic Wright made up the third-placed team.

While those displays were the highlight of the trip to the 70th Annual Eastern Invitational meet in Greensboro, a number of the squad made A finals against some of the best US high school athletes in the region.

The team of Fulton, Jones, Wheddon and Noah Maranzana finished fifth in the 200 metres mixed medley relay, with Allison Steynor, Jamie MacFarlane, White and Gabriel Maranzana ending the race in seventh.

Logan Jones finished eighth in the 15 and over boys 100 metres freestyle A final, fourth in the 100 butterfly B final and seventh in the 200 freestyle B Final. He also finished fifth in the 200 butterfly C Final.

Jacob Leclerc finished first in the 13-14 boys 100 freestyle B final and eighth in the 50 metres freestyle A final and the 800 metres freestyle.

Noah Maranzana managed fifth position in the 15 and over 50 freestyle B final and seventh in the 100 freestyle C final.

Gabe Maranzana won the 15 and over boys 50 free C final, with Dominic Wright finishing fifth. Wright also finished eighth in the 50 metres backstroke, sixth in the 100 freestyle B Final and seventh in the 100 backstroke B final.

Katherine Wheddon finished tenth in the 15 and over girls 800 metres freestyle and eighth in the 50 freestyle C Final,

Jorgia White was fifteenth in the 15 & over 800 metres freestyle.

Steynor finished sixth in the 13-14 girls 50 metres backstroke, with Fulton finishing twelfth in the same event in the 15 and over age group.
