At the time most people are waking up on Friday morning all of Bermuda’s swimmers at the Commonwealth Games will have taken to the water.

Sam Williamson, Elan and Elijah Daley and Emma and Jack Harvey are all scheduled to take part in the opening pool session, which starts at 6.30am Bermuda time.

For Elan Daley, the Commonwealth Games is a chance for her to represent the island again. After swimming for Bermuda at the 2019 world championships in South Korea at the age of 14, she switched to represent Canada internationally before announcing her return this year.

The 21-year-old is excited to be back in a Bermuda squad at major Games and cannot wait to compete in the 50 metres butterfly, the first of her three events in Glasgow.

“I’m excited and I feel really honoured to have the opportunity to represent my country again,” Daley said

“I’m very grateful to be alongside and competing with some amazing people. I think I'll be a little nervous as this is my first long-course season for several years, but I'm very excited, super honoured and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Elan has battled serious shoulder injury in the last few years and she admits that at times she thought she may not be able to reach this level again.

“I’m genuinely just grateful and I can’t even really describe to you the feeling. It took me a while to really think that this could be a possibility again.

“It was difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but my mom always told me faith over fear. That's something that I really live by now and then I started seeing the light.

“I always try to stay positive, believe in myself and I have the support of my family and my country behind me. It’s amazing to feel them lift me up and that makes me more excited to get going again and do my best for myself and my country.”

Back on the same team as her brother Elijah, Elan is delighted to be experiencing the Commonwealth Games with her sibling

“I've been watching Elijah compete internationally for the past couple of years and I'm always in awe.

“I’m always really proud of him for doing everything he can do. I’m always watching live, and just screaming at my laptop, so it’s really cool to be able to experience this with him.

“He really cheers me on. He’s my biggest cheerleader, and I'm his. It will be really cool to be on the pool deck with each other and encourage each other to do as best as we can.”

Elijah Daley will be competing in the 200 metres individual medley on the opening day of competition and will be competing at the Games for the first time

“Representing Bermuda during the summer at international competitions is always an honour for me and I’m really excited to be able to represent my country and I'm just going to go out there and give it all I’ve got.

“It is always a learning experience for me, especially now, as I’m new to representing Bermuda internationally at these big competitions, so I’m just seeing what I can do and hopefully making my country proud.”

Daley and Williamson have been having a battle over recent weeks, with the 200 IM record changing hands on a couple of occasions.

“Sam’s always been great, Elijah said. Growing up, I always looked up to him because he was in the older age group and he’s just a great swimmer and it’s always exciting to race him.”

Williamson believes that the friendly rivalry between himself and Daley could lead to some fast times in the opening session on Friday.

“There is a 99 per cent chance that both of us will beat the record.” Williamson said.

“I think the record definitely goes down on Friday. I’m not sure who will have it, but it will be a great race and whoever gets it, it’ll be fun to see how fast we can push each other in the coming months.

Both the Daleys, Jack Harvey and Williamson are competing in Glasgow before flying to Dominican Republic to take part in the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Williamson knows that a happy swimmer gives his best performance and feels he is in the right frame of mind to produce some quick times.

“It doesn’t matter to me how competitive the meet is or how fast the swimmers are,” Willamson said.

“If I’m going to swim the best I can, I have to be in the mindset of being happy and I need to be in that competition and enjoying it. If I’m not, I won’t swim the fastest that I can and that would be disappointing.

“That’s the same for a lot of the other swimmers as well. If they’re enjoying the the atmosphere, the experience, the whole journey to get there and then (4:26) the competition, we will all have some good swims
