Swimmer Emma Harvey goes into her best event at the Commonwealth Games on Friday morning hoping to challenge for a spot on the podium.

Harvey enters the 50 metres butterfly having been placed in the last of seven heats, which is traditionally reserved for the fastest swimmers in the event and those expected to contend for a place in the semi-finals and finals and medals.

The 25-year-old has been drawn in lane six in her heat alongside big guns Eva Okaro, of England, and Australian Alex Perkins and she is excited to begin her campaign, with her heat scheduled to start around 7.40am Bermuda time.

“It’s actually really exciting to be swimming in the final heat and be given a good lane,” Harvey said.

“I’m right in the mix alongside some world-class swimmers and I’m ready to leave it all out there.”

Harvey is excited to be testing herself against some of the best in the world and she enters the Games with some high expectations.

“I’m not going to lie I would love to walk away with a medal,” she said.

“I realise that is a lofty goal and I would be happy to to make finals, pick up some personal bests and maybe get a national record but it is good to think big and I would love to see myself on the podium.

“I am up against the best in the world so we’ll see what happens.”

One setback to Harvey’s grand plans may have arrived just 24 hours before the start of competition after she woke up in Glasgow on Thursday morning with a cold but she is hoping it will not impact her performance.

“I came down with a cold today,” Harvey said. “I am not feeling the best but I have felt better the longer the day has gone on and I’m hopeful it will not affect my performance too much.

“My training has gone really well, I’m feeling good in the water, had good preparation, feel confident and been lucky that I have not had any real interruptions in the build up to the Games. I am really excited and hopeful of doing really well.”
