Jack Harvey doubled his medal tally at the Central American and Caribbean Games when finishing second in the 100 metres backstroke.

Harvey went one better than 24 hours earlier, when he finished third in the 50 metres backstroke, producing a fantastic final length to pass many of his rivals and touch the wall in second.

The 23-year-old stopped the clock at 54.56sec, equalling his national record as he finished 0.72sec behind winner Marcus Reyes, of Mexico.

Harvey had gone into the final as the fourth-fastest qualifier and was pleased to have leaped two places from the morning session.

“Going into the final I knew the guy who won was probably going to be too strong,” Harvey said.

“But I knew it was going to be a bit of a dogfight for second so I just had to stay relaxed on the first 50, not go out too fast and then try to finish strong.

“That was my plan and that’s what happened, so I’m super happy to get the silver and to get a step higher on the podium than yesterday.”

Harvey’s effort was all the more meritorious given he is struggling with the time difference after making the trip from Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games just 48 hours earlier.

“Going into it in these big competitions you’re just running on adrenaline no matter what,” he said.

“I’m definitely jet-lagged and a little sore from the travel, a little stiff but you just take some caffeine and then hope for the best. I tried not to think about it too much and overthink the travel and I feel pretty much fine.”

Harvey has two events left at CAC Games but admits himself that he is unlikely to medal in them and would be happy just to make a final. But he is keen to watch some of the Commonwealth Games and is predicting a couple of medals over the next few days.

“I knew going from Commonwealths to here that there was a chance of a medal coming to CAC Games,” he said.

“I’ve still got all the group chats from the Commonwealth Games going and I think Jah-Nhai [Perinchief] has g a good shot in the triple jump and obviously Jessica [Lewis] has her final tomorrow, so I'm definitely looking forward to watching them.

“Hopefully I’m not the only person who medals this sure and I'm sure other people will will step up, so I'm excited to watch them perform.”
