Dominic Wright learnt some lessons in his maiden appearance at the World Aquatics Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in Santa Fe, Argentina, over the weekend.

The Bermudian was over the time limit in the boys 14-15 5km final, won by Russia’s Alan Nosov in 55min 59.40sec.

“It was an amazing experience to have the opportunity to compete at such a high level event,” the 15-year-old said.

“I underperformed for my first World Aquatics race, but I’m ready and prepared to put in the work for upcoming events.

“Although the race didn’t go the way I was hoping for, I gained valuable experience and learnt many lessons and I'm ready to work towards the next open water race.”

Due to the cold weather, the race became a wetsuit swim and Wright, who had not trained in a wetsuit, felt that the change worked against him.

The Pan Am 10km gold medal-winner also raced the 14-19 boys 3km knockout sprint. Wright finished 31st overall after two heats and missed the top-20 cut for the semi-finals.

Caroline Black, the swimmer’s mother who accompanied him to Argentina, indicated if schedules align, the Millfield School student could be on island for the Round the Sound on October 11. He won the men’s 4km in 2024.
