Madelyn Moore breaks national record despite work schedule
Madelyn Moore continues to reach new heights in the swimming pool by breaking a national short course record in the 50 metres butterfly.
Moore set a new mark of 27.32sec on island at the Barry Hanson Memorial Meet last weekend, knocking 0.07 off the time set by Emma Harvey at the 2017 Scottish National Short Course Championships.
The 26-year-old’s achievement are all the more meritorious given that she is holding the front line as a member of the Bermuda Police Service’s emergency response team and thought her days of personal bests might be over.
“I was super happy to break Emma’s record,” Moore said.
“We’ve both been in the US for some time and we don’t have the opportunity to swim short course metres too often, so that was a very old record of hers and probably before she went to the US, but I’m very happy with it all the same.
“I didn’t even realise that I’d done it until I was in a post-race debrief with Ben [Smith, national coach] and Logan Jones raced over to tell me I’d broken the record and I was so happy.
“I’d been practising as hard as I can given my work schedule and have not necessarily been focused on times.
“I am back in training school for my BPS continuation course and it’s wild to say that I actually prefer my 12-hour emergency response shifts as it feels like I have more time to train, as opposed to when I'm working 8am to 4pm five days a week in training school, which means I have to be up at 4am to fit in my training.”
Personal best times in the opening meet of the season have given Moore the opportunity to dream big and she has set her sights on the world championships at the end of the year
“I’m now looking at the Short Course World Championships, which will be in China in December,” Moore said.
“The qualification period for that ends in mid-November, so as much as I say that I wasn’t looking too much at times in this first meet, there is only a short period of time before the qualification period ends.
“Now that I have the first meet under my belt, I’m looking at qualifying for that, so that's my first goal and then the Pan Am Games take place in May next year and I already have my eyes on that.”
