Bermuda target Costa Rica in Junior Davis Cup

Bermuda will seek revenge over Costa Rica when the two teams clash in an ITF North, Central American and Caribbean Junior Davis Cup regional pre-qualifying main draw play-off encounter in the Dominican Republic on Friday.

The fifth-seeded Costa Ricans defeated Terry Smith’s side 3-0 in the round-robin stage on the first day of competition before Bermuda went on to overpower Honduras 2-1 and Jamaica 3-0 to book a spot in the main draw.

A 2-1 loss to No 1 seeds Guatemala on Wednesday eliminated Bermuda from fighting for a spot in the top four

“We play Costa Rica again for positions fifth to eighth on Friday,’’ Smith said.

“We are looking forward to revenge from the previous round-robin fixture where they beat us 3-0.

“If we beat Costa Rica, we’ll play for positions five and six, otherwise the final match is for positions seven and eight.”

Zachary McGuire, Tristan Pettit and Tobiah Goodchild have put up gallant displays against highly rated opponents, with McGuire the sole survivor from the team that finished eleventh at last year’s Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifier in Guatemala.

“The players are very comfortable in this forum,’’ Smith added.

“Zachary played in this under-16 competition last year, Tristan and Tobiah played in the under-14 competition last year.

“Some of the other players have also moved up so the overall experience has been progressive, therefore all are quite comfortable.”
