Bermuda’s representation in the IQUW Squash Open has ended as the top seeds took control on Wednesday night.

Micah Franklin, the island’s top male player, came out second best against No 4 seed Matias Knudsen, with the Colombian 11-6, 11-3, 11-6.

Franklin was pleased with his effort against an opponent ranked 99th in the world.

“My opponent is incredible unorthodox and tricky,’’ Franklin said.

“He is very hard to read, it was tough to get into my rhythm. However, I can’t be upset with my effort, I gave it a 100 per cent, left it all out there on the court and at the end of the day the better player won.

“I’m not playing at this regular level consistently, so I wasn't probably expecting to win. I’m a little disappointed I didn't get more points, I think I could have.

“I’m looking forward to watching him throughout the tournament and possibly him even winning it.”

In the women’s event Franklin’s’s wife Eilidh went out in the first round after losing 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 to Mexico’s Sarahi Lopez, while Bermuda-based Canadian, Melina Turk fell short against Wen Li Lai, with the Malaysian winning 11-3, 11-2, 11-4.

Also knocked out was Susie Howells, who went down to second-seeded Colombian, Laura Tovar, 11-3, 11-4, 11-0.

The biggest upset of the women’s first round saw Latvia’s Ineta Hopton, the top seed, lose 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 to Margot Prow of Barbados.

Action continues on Thursday afternoon through to the evening in the quarter-finals for both men and women at the Bermuda Squash Association.
