UBP to support Morgan’s Point Resort Act

The Opposition will support legislation allowing Bermuda’s first $2 billion “destination resort” to be developed if it goes before the House of Assembly today. The Morgan’s Point Resort Act 2011 is expected to be debated by MPs and Shadow Tourism Minister Cole Simons told The Royal Gazette his party would agree to the bill.“This is a new vision for Bermuda as far as hotel developments,” he said last night. “What we have really is a destination resort. This is new. This is a mega-sized project.“There will be three hotels, a thousand apartments and amenities for golf and other sports, as well as a new beach. It’s going to be a new day for Bermuda.”He said the United Bermuda Party backed the bill “in principle” as the development would be on a brownfield site badly in need of regeneration, would create much-needed jobs and would be a boost to the West End.But he said it did so with some reservations, as Government had yet to produce an environmental impact study or give details of how it plans to clean up pollution left behind on the peninsula by the US military.Mr Simons suggested any remediation of pollution at the former US Naval Annex on the border of Southampton and Sandys should be done with the long-term in mind. And he said a “resort of this magnitude”, to be built in several phases over 20 years by developers Southlands Ltd, would be a test for the country.“Is Government going to commit the resources to ensure that our planning laws and regulations are adhered to?” he asked. The Opposition politician said the UBP wanted to know how the resort would manage sewage and water. “It’s like building a new town, a new village,” he said.If approved, the Act will finalise a deal in which Government exchanges 80 acres of public land at Morgan’s Point for the 37-acre Southlands property in Warwick. The developers will also get to lease another 128 acres at the former base land for 262 years and Mr Simons said the financial terms of the lease should be disclosed to Parliament.l Useful websites: www.gov.bm, www.ubp.bm
