The second annual Bermuda Department of Tourism Industry Night was last night warned by Tourism Minister Patrice Minors: “It’s not enough to simply be a beautiful place.”The Department has pledged to raise yearly air arrivals above 300,000 in the next three years, and increase visitor spending ten percent per person.Promising to leave “no stone unturned in helping Bermuda to succeed as an attractive destination”, the Minister applauded recent initiatives to “regain the business that Bermuda has lost over the years”.Before an audience of stakeholders, vendors and guests at the Fairmont Southampton, the Minister noted that Bermuda’s summer arrivals had been boosted by group business.“Bermuda’s proximity to major US cities, as well as our strong infrastructure and amenities such as golf, make our destination particularly desirable for the group and incentive market,” she said.In the coming year, the Department of Tourism will develop a Restaurant Week from January 16 to 23, and build on this year’s ‘Feel the Love Month’ from January 23 to March 3.“College Weeks Reunion is confirmed for March 15 to 18, 2012, targeting a mature audience who remember the good old days back in the 1960s and 1970s, who would enjoy a visit back to Bermuda and a reunion with old friends.”The reunion will go to market on October 1, Ms Minors said. The Department of Tourism’s partnership with the Bermuda Alliance for Tourism was giving the Island’s smaller hotels a voice, she added, and the Bermuda Hospitality Institute was helping to entice “a motivated and caring young work force” to the industry.Calling for applause for the ambassadors for Bermuda recently broadcast on CBS radio, Ms Minors also brought to the stage Nelsalene Lespere.Selected from a competition in July, Ms Lespere has provided the voice for a new series of television ads promoting Bermuda tourism across North America.Useful website: www.gotobermuda.com.
