56th Bridge Regional draws 375 foreign competitors

Close to 400 people travelled to the Island last month as part of the 56th annual Bermuda Regional Bridge Tournament.

The event was hailed by the Bermuda Tourism Authority, which noted the 375 visitors represented a 15 percent increase compared with past years.

People travelled to the Island from the US, UK, Austria, Germany, Hong Kong, Bahamas, Costa Rica and Canada to compete in the event, which ran from January 25 to 31. They were joined by 158 local players.

“It is not only a world-class tournament but is also an opportunity for the players to enjoy the beauty and attractions of our Island while they pursue their passion for bridge,” said BTA chairman David Dodwell. “This is a wonderful example of the type of event we that fits well with our strategy.”

Tournament chairman Katrina Van Pelt attributed the growth to “a new programme with better stratifications, gold points and team games”.

“New international players were attracted this year through our website and a new marketing strategy, while we welcomed regulars back, including large groups from New Jersey, Halifax and Toronto,” she said.
