Bad weather forces cruise ship to skip Bermuda visit

A cruise ship was forced to cancel a trip to Bermuda yesterday owing to severe weather in New York.

According to the website Cruise Hive, the Norwegian Gem was supposed to head for the island, the first destination on her itinerary, on Wednesday afternoon, but gale-force winds forced her to stay in New York overnight and instead leave yesterday morning.

Because of the delay, the ship skipped Bermuda and will instead spend three more hours in her next destination, St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.

The website reads: “To adjust Norwegian Gem‘s operation to compensate for the departure delay and still reach Bermuda in time for a reasonable port of call would be contrary to the cruise line’s Sail and Sustain initiatives.”

She is scheduled to arrive at the US Virgin Islands on Sunday and is set to reach Panama City, her final port, by February 6.
