A step back in time to celebrate hotel’s 100th anniversary

The 1920s came roaring back into fashion when staff and guests of the Cambridge Beaches in Somerset celebrated the resort’s 100th birthday.

Women wearing flapper dresses and men in black tie stepped back in time, dancing to The Charleston – a song that is also 100 years old this year – and other musical genres from the past century.

But there was a serious element to last weekend’s celebrations – proceeds from the evening, in which guests enjoyed a five-course meal, were donated to the neighbouring Packwood Home for seniors, coincidentally also marking its 100 birthday this year.

Clarence Hofheins, the general manager of Cambridge Beaches, praised guests for supporting the resort during the height of the Covid pandemic.

He said: “The Government of Bermuda jumped in and helped. The existing owners stood by us and people in this room stood by us. We have tables of different companies, partners, all our guests who kept coming back.

“We wouldn’t be here without you. We thank you. Our staff still have their jobs because of you guys.”

Mr Hofheins also praised Phil Hospod and his company, Dovetail, who has invested in upgrades to the resort after buying it in 2021.

He said: “During Covid we had a great company come to our aid. The reason why we’re here in this beautiful facility, the reason why we have won so many awards, the reason why we’re going to have another 100 years is because of Dovetail & Co and Phil Hospod.

Mr Hospod said: “It’s very special. It’s great to be part of something as special as Cambridge Beaches. We’ve done so much but we’re just getting started.

“We’re investing in the present. We’re going to keep at it and keep going for another 100 years and that’s the big dream.”

Presenting a cheque for $10,000 to representatives from the Packwood Home, Mr Hofheins said: “We celebrate the same birthday and they’ve been here and if you don’t know about their history – again, Covid was really tough on them and they’re still struggling right now so we want to make a contribution, taking some of the proceeds from this event to donate to the Packwood Home.

“We definitely know you. We work beside you, we will give you support we will give you help, whatever you need.”
