Minors steals the show at Vermont Championships

Dage Minors took first place honours in the Senior School Boys race in the Front Street Mile last month. Minors was named Male Athlete of the Year at the Vermont State Championships at the weekend.

Dage Minors was named Male Athlete of the Year for Vermont’s Indoor Track State Championships at the weekend.The middle distance runner was in fine form at the Championships powering to victories in the 1,600 metres (4:34.37), 1,000 metres (2:43.26) and the 600 metres (1:25.68).Minors accomplished his triple in back-to-back-to-back fashion, and then helped his St Johnsbury’s Academy’s 4x400 metre relay team claim a narrow victory over rivals Mount Anthony Union High School.Minors said: “I felt pretty good when I woke up and I said as might as well go for the triple,” said Minors, who won the 1,000 metres for the third successive year.“We went for it and it all worked out.”The youngster has had a memorable 12 months, and started his 2013 season with a fifth-place finish while competing for his school in the High School Boys’ Seeded Mile at the Dartmouth Relays in New Hampshire.His impressive time of four minutes, 24.82 seconds was four seconds behind eventual winner Bryce Kelley (4:20.13).The time put Minors in the top six in the New England region that includes New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut.The following week he clipped the tape at four minutes, 33 seconds to win the KPMG Front Street Mile Senior Boys’ division.Also competing at the weekend was Ashley Berry and Henry Stevens-Carty.Berry, competing in the Virgina Tech Challenge, finished ninth in the mile (5:12.27).She also ran a personal best in the 3,000m the previous week, placing eighth (9:55.00) at the Virgina Tech Husky Classic.Stevens-Carty, competing in the Samford Multi and Invitational Indoor meet, finished 11th in the 800m (1:54.30).
