Pacers claim impress medal haul

Juma Mouchette won the 17-18 3,000 metres at the Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational meet in North Carolina.

Bermuda Pacers Track Club just returned from competing in the Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational meet in North Carolina, winning 31 medals, including 12 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze to place in the top five for the third consecutive year.Last year the team won a record 34 medals and placed second overall out of 100 teams. Last weekend at the Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, the Pacers continued to set high standards in their 32nd appearance at the meet as they achieved their second highest medal haul from the three days of intense competition. The boys team placed second overall while the 9-10 girls team won their division and Elisha Darrell was crowned the outstanding athlete in the 13-14 boys division.The 33 member team saw 12 athletes making their debut appearance. The team competed in 83 individual events, three 4x400 and one 4x100 metres relay event.During the first day of competition the team earned three gold medals when Jayden Ming won the 11-12 boys 3,000 metres, Juma Mouchette won the 17-18 3,000 metres and Elisha Darrell the 13-14 boys triple jump with a personal best leap of 12.67 metres. The team also won two silver medals when Seth Hardtman and Zakiah Lewis came second in the 9-10 boys and 11-12 girls high jump.In the 200 metres semi-finals Zakayza Parsons, DeAndre Warner, Taylor Hines, Zariah Simmons, Telilah Wears and Taahira Butterfield all qualified for the 200 metres finals.A further eight medals were picked up by the Pacers on day two when Elisha Darrell won two gold medals in the 13-14 boys long and high jump. Selah Tuzo, Aaron Jacobs and Juma Mouchette won gold medals in the 1,500 metres and Sakari Famous gold in the 13-14 girls high jump. Jade Johnson won a silver medal in the 9-10 girls 1,500 metres and Sajan Harvey and Jahmari Sutton the bronze in the 1,500 metres. As well, six other athletes qualified for the 100 metres and 400 metres finals.The final day of competition saw 27 of the 33 team members in action. Up first was the 800 metres finals where Selah Tuzo and Kazhi Sealy placed third in the 9-10 girls and boys 800 metres while Mikaela Outerbridge and Sajan Harvey placed second in the 11-12 girls and boys 800 metres. Jahmari Sutton finished third in the 15-16 boys 800 metres while Mouchette just missed out winning his third gold when he placed second in the 17-18 800 metres.During the long jump events, Zakayza Parsons and Zakiah Lewis captured gold medals in the 9-10 and 11-12 girls finals respectively. During the 15-16 girls high jump final Azaire Smith finished third in the 15-16 girls high jump.The sprint finals were the final events of the day, with Zakaya Parsons placing second in the 9-10 girls 100 metres final with a time of 13.83. DeAndra Warner placed seventh in the 9-10 boys final while Zakiah Lewis placed fourth and Taylor Hines seventh. Telilah Wears was sixth in the 13-14 girls final and Taahira Butterfield fourth in the 17-18 girls final.DeAndra Warner bounced back to win the 9-10 boys 200 metres while Zakayza Parsons placed third. Taylor Hines was fifth in the 11-12 girls final while Telilah Wears and Zariah Simmons were fourth and sixth respectively in the 13-14 girls final. Butterfield took the bronze in the 17-18 finals in a time of 25.34.The competition ended with the girls 9-10 team winning the 4x400 metres and the 11-12 girls team placing second in the 4x400 metres.
