Cash and bragging rights will be up for grabs when Bermuda Pacers Track Club, in conjunction with new title sponsor Somerset Reinsurance, hosts the 17th annual Schools Relay Classic at Flora Duffy Stadium on Friday.

Some 300 student athletes from public and private schools will compete for $3,900 in prize money in addition to the Relay Classic trophies in their respective events.

The highlight of the evening will again be the 4x100 metre finals to be contested among the top eight primary, middle and senior schools.

That event will also feature many of the island’s athletes that competed at last month’s Carifta Games in Grenada, where Bermuda secured a gold and two silver medals.

This year’s Schools Relay Classic will also feature special events, including the Special Olympians 100 metres race, the Whitney Institute Drum line and the Berkeley Institute Dancing Cheerleaders.

Action kicks off at 5.30pm with the primary and middle school teams competing in the 4x100 metre semi-finals, followed by the special events at 6.15pm, the 4x400 metres relays which are all timed finals at 7pm and 4x100 metre finals at 8pm.

West End Primary, Sandys Secondary Middle School and Berkeley Institute are the reigning champions and will be back to defend their titles.

Admission is free.
