Island youngsters urged to join global athletics celebration

Bermuda’s aspiring runners, jumpers and throwers will get their chance to shine on Saturday when the Bermuda National Athletics Association hosts the Kids’ Athletics Day at Whitney Institute.

The BNAA will host the event on Saturday from 10am to 12pm, offering children a morning of running, jumping and throwing activities led by local coaches and athletes. The free-flowing programme will take participants through obstacle runs, jumping stations, throwing events and team relays — all designed to build confidence, teamwork and physical literacy in an inclusive and energetic setting.

The event forms part of World Athletics’ fifth annual Kids' Athletics Day. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has reached 1.3 million children across schools, clubs and communities in countries around the world, and the 2026 campaign has set its most ambitious target yet: inspiring at least 700,000 more children to participate, pushing the cumulative five-year total beyond two million.

The 2026 theme celebrates the power of FIVE — marking half a decade of impact and focusing on celebration and connection. This year’s global launch will take place at the Debswana World Relays in Botswana, where Kids’ Athletics ambassador Letsile Tebogo — the men's 200 metres Olympic champion — will lead the campaign

“This exciting community event aims to inspire the next generation by spreading the love of sport and connecting new communities through athletics, while ensuring every child has the opportunity to move, learn and thrive,” said Jarita Vickers, president of BNAA.

The event on Saturday is open to children of all abilities and athletic backgrounds, with the format designed specifically to be welcoming and age-appropriate and an emphasis placed on participation, fun and physical literacy rather than competition or performance.

Saturday's event is not a one-off with BNAA aiming to host sessions on a quarterly basis throughout the year, with further announcements on dates to follow.
