Sprinter Norre Robinson suffered a hamstring problem in the 200 metres heats at the Commonwealth Games and was unable to complete his race.

The 18-year-old was in heat eight of ten, with the athletes he lined up against including Bahamian great Steven Gardiner at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

Robinson was faster than the former 400m Olympic champion over the opening 50m before dramatically pulling up at the top of the home straight and limping off the track.

Reflecting on the race afterwards, he remained upbeat.

“I was looking forward to it and I was ready,” he said. “This has been one of the only races of the season where I was ready to beat people, ready to run my own race and show everyone what’s up.

“I was going off the turn and then I just felt my hamstring pop, so I stopped because I didn't want to push through injury as I’ve still got a long way ahead in my track career.”

When asked if the cooler temperatures in Glasgow may have contributed to injury, he said: “It was probably a lot of factors. We’ve had a whole lot of travelling, a lot of heavy training throughout the season. That's something we'll look at.”

Robinson had shown he was in good form going into the Games, having set a personal best of 21.40sec this year and as part of the Bermuda 4x100 team that narrowly missed the island’s 40-year-old national record at the Barbados Grand Prix earlier this month.

Despite today’s setback, he said he had enjoyed his time at the Games.

“It's been a really nice experience and it’s great to be here on such a big stage and represent my country,” he said.

The teenager has time on his side to recover and compete in future major competitions, although he does not expect to race again until the indoor season early next year.

“Until then, it's probably just focusing on staying healthy, building myself back up and getting ready for the next season,” he said. “I’ve got a bunch of time, a bunch of growing to do.”

His heat was won by Justice Oratile, of Botswana, in 20.58. The fastest qualifier from the heats was Jamaica’s Javaughn Powell, in 20.28.

Bermuda has three track and field athletes scheduled to compete at the Games on Thursday; triple jumper Jah-Nhai Perinchief, who won bronze at the 2022 Games in Birmingham; Caitlyn Bobb in the women’s 400m semi-finals; and Tiara DeRosa in the women’s discus final.
