Bermuda Pacers head coach Cal Simons has hailed the club’s impressive display at this year’s Russell E Blunt East Coast Invitational in North Carolina.

The local team were represented by a 17-strong contingent that came away from the prestigious track meet with twelve medals, including two gold, eight silver and two bronze.

“The level that the athletes competed at was very high,” Simons told The Royal Gazette.

“When comparing their results with the other athletes at the track meet, the coaches, and I were very impressed with their performances. To have so many of them produce personal best performances was fantastic.

“A lot of credit has to go to the coaches who worked extremely hard to prepare the athletes.”

Xander Romeo secured gold in the 13-14 boys discus with a personal best throw of 45.18 metres as did Raelyn Robinson, the youngest member on the team, in the 8 and under girls long jump with a leap of 3.62 metres.

Amaya Davis opened Pacers’ medal account after earning silver in the 13-14 girls triple jump with a leap of 10.64 metres.

Romeo bagged a second medal at the track meet after claiming silver in the 13-14 boys shot putt with a throw of 10.30 metres.

Orian Medeiros also won silver in the 13-14 boys high jump with a leap of 1.55 metres.

Diamond Morris also earned silver in the 9-10 girls 800 metres with a personal best time of 2:45.38 and Surri Russell in the 17-18 boys 800 metres with a personal best time of 1:58.50.

Bree Simmons claimed silver in 9-10 girls long jump with a leap of 3.89 metres.

Nico Simmons won silver in the 9-10 boys 100 metres with a personal best time of 13.26sec and also in the 200 metres in a personal best time of 27.79 sec.

Skye Furbert, Morris Bree Simmons and Giselle Reid Rubaine won the bronze medal in the 9-10 girls 4x100 relay in a personal best time of 1:00.53 and Davis in the 13-14 girls long jump with a leap of 5.02 metres to earn a second trip to the podium.

In all, Pacers athletes achieved seven personal best, with four narrowly missing out on the podium after finishing fourth in their respective events.

Sprinter Nico Simmons was also denied another shot at a medal after being forced to withdraw from the 9-10 boys 400 metre final due to injury.

The three-day track meet was held July 24 to 26 and hosted by Striders Track Club.
