Tugboats leave Bermuda after 30 years of faithful service
After decades of service in Bermuda’s waters, the ageing tugboats Powerful and Faithful departed the island this weekend.
The vessels are expected to travel to Freeport, Bahamas, for repairs before continuing on to Trinidad.
Powerful and Faithful were built by Cochrane Shipbuilders in Britain in 1988 and 1990, respectively but were recently phased out of use after the introduction of two new tugs, also named Powerful and Faithful.
In early 2020 the older tugs were listed for sale at $375,000 each on the SeaBoats marine broker website. However, the Government said at the time that the listing was in error and the vessels were not for sale.
The new vessels cost the taxpayer $6.25 million each and arrived in 2020, but did not enter use immediately because the crews needed additional training overseas - something made more difficult by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Requests for more information from the transport ministry have been made.
