Two truck drivers were taken to hospital yesterday after a serious collision on North Shore Road, police said.

The incident happened at about 8.15am in the area of Overview Hill, just east of the junction with Berkeley Road, Pembroke.

Police and other first responders were sent to the scene after reports that a dumpster truck and water truck collided.

The Bermuda Police Service said: “It is believed that the trucks were travelling in opposite directions when the collision occurred.

“Both male drivers were transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

“As a result of this collision, the roadway is completely blocked. Diversions have been put in place at Overview Hill and Langton Hill while the scene is being examined and cleared.”

Video footage taken after the collision, which was shared on social media, showed a truck with an overturned flatbed trailer in the middle of the road.

A second truck, which appeared to have suffered extensive damage, could be seen off the road nearby.

The video showed the road between the two vehicles littered with debris.

The Royal Gazette understands that the trailer was hired by the Bermuda Gymnastics Association and was to take part in the Bermuda Day Parade.

A spokesman for the association said this morning: “Bermuda Gymnastics would like to extend a thank you to all of the emergency personnel, police and the general public for their assistance during the accident involving the parade truck.

“Thank you to all who have reached out to us with concern for everyone involved. There were no children or staff involved. Our driver is also OK.”

A member of the association later told The Royal Gazette that its students would not be able to take part in the parade.

He said: “It’s disappointing, but at least nobody was killed in this incident.”

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Police Constable Kayjuna Lema on 211 or e-mail klema@bps.bm.
