The US Coast Guard has halted the search for a worker who fell from a cruise ship travelling from Bermuda to Boston.

The US Coast Guard Sector Southeast New England confirmed to US media that it received a report that a crew member on the Norwegian Breakaway had fallen from the ship late on Saturday night.

Security cameras reportedly showed the worker fall from an upper deck while the ship was about 12 miles off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

The ship turned around and launched a search of the area, with a helicopter joining the effort shortly after 1.15am.

However, the search was suspended on Sunday afternoon “pending new information”.

A Norwegian Cruise Line statement said: “Late in the evening on April 25, a crew member went overboard east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

“Upon confirming the incident, the vessel immediately informed the United States Coast Guard Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre and a co-ordinated search-and-rescue operation was initiated.

“The safety, security and wellbeing of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crew member’s family during this difficult time.”
