An Italian roll-on/roll-off ship has docked in the East End after an engine problem triggered an emergency docking.

Grendi Futura docked in Penno’s Wharf in St George’s yesterday afternoon to await repairs on one of the supply vessel’s main engines.

A spokesman for the Department of Marine and Ports Services said the 180-metre vessel was on her way from Mobile, Alabama when she made her detour.

He added the department was still waiting for confirmation on the make of her engine parts and could not determine how long she would remain at the island.

Built in 2014, Grendi Futura serves as a supply ship with roll-on/roll-off capabilities.

Her RO/RO designation allows her to transport wheeled cargo such as cars, buses, motorcycles and trucks.

Gruppo Grendi 1828, the company that owns the ship, has been contacted for comment.
