The Causeway was closed for about 30 minutes today after a private plane made an emergency landing in Bermuda.

The corporate vessel, FJ0646 Flexjet, was forced to land at LF Wade International Airport at about 11.47am when its cockpit became filled with smoke.

A Skyport spokeswoman confirmed the incident and explained the Causeway and Kindley Field Road closed temporarily in accordance with the company’s emergency protocols.

The aircraft was flying from West Palm Beach in Florida to Beja, Portugal when the incident occurred.

It carried six people at the time, four of whom were crew members.

A Skyport spokeswoman said: “The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service met the aircraft upon arrival and, following inspection, escorted it to apron four where the passengers subsequently deplaned.

“Further assessment is currently under way by the relevant agencies and arrangements have been made for the passengers to continue their travel on an alternate aircraft at a later time.”

Traffic access to the Causeway and Kindley Field Road reopened at about 12.20pm.
