A man who rode away from the police sustained injuries following a collision on the Causeway early this morning.

The Bermuda Police Service said an officer was injured while trying to apprehend the suspect.

At close to 1am this morning, the police said officers were conducting traffic checks near the junction of Cahow Way and Kindley Field Road, St George’s, when they observed a motorcycle being ridden by a male, heading east at a high rate of speed.

Although officers signalled for the rider to stop, he ignored their instruction and rode off in a westerly direction along the Causeway.

He lost control of the vehicle and fell onto the roadway, east of Blue Hole Hill.

The rider sustained a leg injury and was attended to at the scene by EMTs before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

A police officer was injured in the attempt to apprehend the suspect.

The man was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

The Causeway was closed to traffic following the collision while the scene being processed.

Motorists heading to and from St George’s were urged to delay their travel.
