Storms light up the sky off West End

Stormy weather driving across the island ahead of Tropical Storm Florence yielded a striking shot of lightning off the West End for photography aficionado Jorg Rudolf.

The unsettled weather is not associated with Florence, according to the Bermuda Weather Service.

“It was beautiful yesterday — I didn't know there was going to be so much lightning,” said Mr Rudolf, a pastry chef in Dockyard who takes pictures as a hobby.

Mr Rudolf, who lives by Somerset Bridge in Sandys, said he set his camera up on his balcony last night and left it taking pictures for a couple of hours.

With the aperture open for 20 seconds at a time, he said the camera “catches whatever comes on — when lightning strikes, you get lucky”.

Florence, predicted to ramp back up again as a major hurricane, is forecast to approach the island early next week.

Mr Rudolf pointed out that the storm was carrying Sahara dust with it that could produce photogenic atmospheric effects.

“There may be good pictures with all the sand it's carrying, which it picked up from Africa — you never know,” he said.

“I know from Europe that you can go skiing in late winter and when the wind comes from Africa the snow turns pinkish or reddish.

“We'll see what happens.”
