This month is already more than twice as wet as the average June, but drier weather is coming in time for the weekend.

Kim Zuill, meteorologist at the Bermuda Weather service, said that as of yesterday 9.29 inches of rain has been recorded so far this month.

While the figure is more than double the June average of 4.41in, it still falls short of the record set in 1962 of 14.18in.

She said the island should enjoy a break in the rain this week.

“The forecast is calling for an area of high pressure to descend from the Canadian Maritimes and settle to our north through northeast over the weekend with the associated ridge extending over us,” Ms Zuill said.

“This should not only snuff out any lingering cloud, except in early mornings when slightly cooler, but will offer a buffer from the incoming weather with drier light to moderate easterly winds.”

She said that the ridge is expected to retreat early next week.

“We will have to see if the inverted troughs approaching from the southeast will overcome the narrowing ridge, but that is beyond the official forecast,” Ms Zuill.

“I am sure many will appreciate this change that reflects more typical June conditions and while over a weekend as well.”

The unusually wet weather this month comes after record-setting rainfall last month, when 12.39in of rain was recorded, surpassing the previous record of 11.7in set in 1997.

So far this year, 33.92in of rain has been recorded, considerably more than the normal year-to-date average of 24.9in.
