Storm force: Tammy, once again a tropical storm, continues to pack powerful gusts and rough seas

Tammy has returned to tropical storm strength after weakening overnight, but it is now moving away from the island.

It is still expected to deliver “gusty winds and heavy rainfall” to the island while near by.

The US National Hurricane Centre said at noon that Tropical Storm Tammy was about 215 miles east of Bermuda and moving northeast at about 3mph.

“A turn to the north is expected tonight followed by a turn to the east over the next couple of days,” the NHC forecast stated.

“On the forecast track, Tammy will begin to move away from Bermuda Saturday morning. Maximum sustained winds are near 65mph with higher gusts.

“Little change in strength is expected during the next day or so. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles from the centre.

The Bermuda Weather Service said Tammy would bring “strong to occasional gust-force winds” today as the system meanders to the island’s east.

“Later today through tonight a few showers can be expected,” the BWS forecast stated.

“The weekend then sees much more settled weather developing as Tammy clears away east and high pressure builds in. Hazardous surf and rip currents continue for the moment as easterly swells peak.”

A gale warning is in effect this afternoon and evening, while a small-craft warning is expected to be in place from late this evening until Saturday evening.

Winds were forecast to reach 29 to 40mph, with gusts reaching 46 to 52mph, especially in developing showers.

Winds and showers should peter away as Tammy drifts farther eastward, with rough seas diminishing today and tonight.

Hurricane season continues until the end of November.
