Showers should subside for a clear Cup Match despite recent waves of rain, the director of the Bermuda Weather Service said.

Philip Rogers tied the rain and thunderstorms to “a broad trough of low pressure” that is expected to weaken by this morning.

He added that, while today may see scattered showers and a possible thunder in between sunny breaks, Thursday and Friday should be better.

Mr Rogers said: “Thursday will see more sunshine as a ridge of high pressure builds south of the island, but there will be cloudy periods around with the continued chance of a few showers.

“Friday and Saturday will be sunny with cloudy period and a few scattered showers.”

Mr Rogers said tomorrow, Friday and Saturday are expected to be between 87F and 88F.

He added that winds today would be “occasionally strong” in showers and thunderstorms, but will diminish to a moderate push throughout the rest of the week.

Richard Scott, the president of Somerset Cricket Club, said the forecast would bring no surprises as the game had faced bad weather in the past.

He said: “There have been times when the match has had to stop or be delayed as a result of the weather.

“One of the things that we would do, of course, is hope that whenever the rain ceases, we’ll just get right back to the play.”

Mr Scott emphasised that players and spectators would not be put in jeopardy.

He added that, in the worst-case scenario, he and Neil Paynter, the president of St George’s Cricket Club, would discuss whether or not to suspend the game if the rain gets too bad — although such a decision falls under the remit of the umpires.

Mr Scott said: “We’re all just pretty much playing it by ear and hoping that Mother Nature gives us a little reprieve so that we can actually have a little bit of cricket going on.”
