Retreat prioritises educators’ wellbeing

The personal wellbeing and development of teachers as leadership professionals will be on the front burner at a retreat for educators this month.

“Come Back to Yourself”, a luxury session for educators at The Retreat House, 4 Fairmont Drive, Southampton, on October 24, is geared at supporting educators wellness, their personal growth and leadership abilities.

Alandra Swan, the organiser, said that the event, hosted by PinkSands Education, is also poised to provide a “meaningful impact” on the classroom environment.

“I’m particularly passionate about shifting the conversation from simply developing teachers professionally to investing in the whole educator,” she added.

While wellness and restoration are important elements of the experience, she said the retreat is rooted in a much broader conversation.

The educator said it speaks to “about how we develop, support, and invest in educators as whole individuals, rather than focusing solely on their classroom performance”.

She said: “I firmly believe that educator wellness should not be viewed as separate from professional development, but as an essential part of it.

“One of the central components of the retreat is a leadership and personal development session introducing participants to elements of PinkSands Education’s Whole Educator Framework.

“This framework explores the interconnectedness of personal wellbeing, professional identity, relationships, purpose and leadership capacity.”

Ms Swan, an educator of 16 years, said that through guided reflection, meaningful discussion and practical exercises, participants will have opportunities to examine how they are functioning personally and professionally.

She said the teachers will be able to identify areas for growth and explore ways to lead more intentionally in their lives and careers.

“The retreat will also create space for professional connection and dialogue among educators and school leaders, encouraging a community of support that extends beyond the experience itself,” Ms Swan said.

She said it will provide outcomes which will benefit the classroom.

Ms Swan explained: “I believe the wellbeing of an educator has a meaningful influence on the classroom environment.

“Teachers do far more than deliver curriculum. They establish the emotional tone of the classroom, build relationships, respond to children’s needs and make countless decisions throughout the day.

“When educators feel supported and have practical tools to manage their own wellbeing, they are better positioned to demonstrate patience, emotional regulation, creativity and responsiveness.”

She said such qualities contribute to positive relationships and learning environments where children can feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

While one retreat cannot resolve the wider challenges facing the profession, Ms Swan said it can provide “an important starting point for greater self-awareness, sustainable personal practices, and intentional professional growth”.

Ms Swan organised Bermuda’s first teacher wellness retreat in 2019 in conjunction with the Bermuda Education Network.

She said the event this month builds on that foundation through PinkSands Education under her brand, “Nourish. Restore. Lead”.

The forum provides a long-term vision of introducing a more holistic approach to educator development and leadership in Bermuda, she added.

“For me, the larger story is about rethinking what it means to invest in educators,” Ms Swan said.

“We regularly discuss improving educational outcomes, strengthening teaching practices and developing school leadership, but how often do we consider the personal wellbeing and development of each individual responsible for delivering those outcomes?” she questioned.

Through an exercise focused on reflection and planning, participants will be invited to examine key dimensions of their lives, including physical and emotional wellbeing, relationships, professional identity, personal purpose and leadership.

In a structured self-assessment, they will identify where they feel fulfilled, where they may be operating on empty and what aspects of their lives need greater attention.

Importantly, she said that the exercise will not end with reflection as each participant will develop a personalised “Nourish. Restore. Lead.”action plan.

Ms Swan said: “The intention is for every educator to leave with something tangible: a written, realistic plan they can begin implementing immediately, rather than simply feeling inspired for a day.”
