Clean sweep: P4 students at Paget Primary tally their pickings following a clean up involving the whole student body of the Ord Road school earlier in the year.

On Friday, February 24th, 2012 at 1.15pm, everyone was overwhelmed with excitement at Paget Primary School. The students, teachers, and parents were getting ready to go and pick up trash. We picked up trash to perform community service and to “Keep Bermuda Beautiful!”.“We wanted to do a service that was action-oriented,” explained Jukita Wilson, a Guidance Counsellor at the school, and the Community Service Committee chairperson.“Collecting trash helps to keep our school grounds safe,” added Principal Trina Cariah.Primary 1 to Primary 6 students picked up trash with a parent or teacher. Each grade level went to a different location. The P4 students went to Sylvan Dell Road, and the P5 and P6 students went to the railroad trails. The P1s, P2s, and P3s stayed on the school property. The teachers brought gloves, recyclable bags, and colourful trash bags. We were each given two gloves to pick up trash with.We separated the recyclables from the rest of the trash. Some students were tired at the end of the clean-up and were dripping with sweat. We collected so many bags of trash; the official amount was nine recyclable bags and 19 regular trash bags.At the end of the clean-up, we took a group picture.“I felt excited about it because I like to help the environment,” declared Justin Silva, Head Boy.We all felt proud of how we left our neighbourhood, cleaner than when we started.
