Robotics team heading for Florida

Engineering innovators: The Somersfield Academy team.

After unexpected success in Toronto, the Somersfield robotics team has been invited to attend the World Championship in Lakeland Florida. There are 64 teams from 20 countries competing in the tournament at the University of Florida. The Somersfield Robotics team is the first Lego robotics team from Bermuda. This year’s competition is entitled Food Factor. This means that the team had to come up with ideas to stop food contamination in our country. In order to figure this out, we went to BGA where they told us about their food safety precautions. We were shown all the food and the products they store. We also had Blair Simmons come and talk to us about the procedures they use to keep our food safe at Bermuda Container Line.In competition, the robot is not the only thing we have to do. We also have to make a project about how to stop food contamination in our local community. The judges will also ask us to describe our robot and the things it does. Our coaches Mark Brown and Dorte Horsfield said, “ We are astonished that we are going to Florida. It is our first year doing the robotics tournaments and we are pleased that we have a great team of outstanding young people.”Our team members are: Sam Mello, Adam Pimentel, Jonathan Moore, Robin Horsfield, Josh Irvine, Evan Farrow, Josh Kirk and Mackenzie van Zanden.
