An impressive year for West Pembroke Primary

Young Observer paid the West Pembroke family a visit earlier this week to join them in celebrating their achievements this school year. It has been a tremendous school year for West Pembroke in so many areas.

West Pembroke offers an extensive extra curricular programme for their students. It includes a sailing club, swimming club, gardening club, photography club, art club, exercise and fitness club and Spanish. The students make use of the Saltus swimming pool at 7.30am and sailing takes place on a Wednesday afternoon during the school day. These activities are offered in addition to the netball and football clubs.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Hadassah Reid, 11. Gabrielle won the poetry category of the inaugural Bermuda Blue Halo Children's Writing Contest. The name of the contest was “What Does Our Ocean Mean to You?”

Here is her poem:

“Whispers of the Sea”

I hear the ocean whispering to me;

And this is what it said to me:

I'm going to say something you might expect;

And if you don't fine but have some respect!

Why? Why? Why? Do you hurt me?

You trash me and ignore me?

As if you don't care

You dump plastic and bottles in me — do you think that's fair?

Don't cover your ears and say you don't hear me cry,

Because for all you care — I could dry up and die.

I have stopped waiting for you to change, and I'm tired and through,

Now my last request to you, tell the people how I feel — but can I trust you?

As the ocean's voice died away,

I really wanted it to stay.

For the statement the ocean was trying to make was this,

Have we gone too far with our trash and are we too late?

Congratulations to Destani and DeAndre Warner who were crowned female and male champion for their age groups at the BSSF Inter School Sports.

West Pembroke entered artwork in a Masterworks Art competition entitled 'Art in sailing'. The students received certificates for their participation. The students were: Portia Mcghie, Ashley Stirling, Dequan Trott, Kelly Trott, Zene Wade, Salayah Stange, Jalisa Caines, Emma Knights, Andrew Cardwell, LaJhae Williams, and Gabrielle Romaine.

In track and field the West Pembroke girls have proven themselves to be among the best. In the over-10 girls the overall champion was Destani Warner, while the under-nine girls' champion was Jade Johnston.

In the Relay Classic at the National Sports Centre, the 4x400m girls' team came second overall. The team consisted of Tesyah Astwood, Zasia Edwards, Jade Johnston and Destani Warner. In the 4x100m girls' relay, the school came third overall with a team consisting of Sh'Nyah Akinstall, Kelly Trott, Zasia Edwards and Deatani Warner.

West Pembroke came first again in the Relay Classic once the boys' team score was taken into account. The school has won this event five years out of six.

In primary school football, the West Pembroke football boys won the nine-a-side championship finals. They defeated St David's Primary 7-0 in the final.
