This term, Year Six students have been learning about refugees and migration. Last week, Year 6 had a special visitor, Stephen Castree.

Mr Castree owns a company, the Development Initiative (TDI). TDI works around the world clearing mines in countries such as Sudan, Mali and Afghanistan.

Mr Castree explained a lot about what mines were and how people who work at his company risk their lives by trying to dig them out of the ground.

His company works on making a city or village OK to live in after a war. They pick up shells and bullets so that children and adults don’t pick these items up and bring them into their homes.

“I learnt that countries put down landmines to protect their countries. Also I learnt that landmines blow up just when people 20kg step on them. They are very dangerous,” said Ava Adams, 6C.

“I learnt that ten people die every day from mines and 30 to 40 per cent of them are under 15,” said Millie Lewis, 6C.
