Regiment praised for safety efforts

Soldiers from the Royal Bermuda Regiment are earning praise for their part in keeping the America’s Cup event safe.

Rob Wallet, co-ordinator at the Joint Agency Command Centre, said the partnership between the Regiment, event organisers, and the island’s emergency services had been positive.

“We worked very well together during exercises and planning and we’ve developed a good working relationship,” he said.

“It’s been really seamless the way the Royal Bermuda Regiment has folded into the planning.”

Jerome Laws, chief inspector with the Bermuda Police Service, said that working with the regiment had allowed greater coverage on both land and the water.

“The soldiers’ willingness and readiness to perform this role is at a very professional standard,” he said.

Jeff Baron, Minister of National Security, said he had been impressed with the enthusiasm all ranks of the Regiment had demonstrated. “I’ve heard very positive feedback on their performance and their ability to adapt to something that is quite new to them and to the demands of the various stakeholders,” he said.

Captain Duncan Simons, with the Royal Bermuda Regiment, said that he was happy with how things had been going to date.

“We just have to keep up our high standards and keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.

“My emphasis has been that our soldiers conduct themselves professionally, provide good customer service, and be the welcoming face of Bermuda.”
