A New Zealand educational consultant is to host seminars at five Bermudian schools over the next three weeks, including two free sessions.

Lance King, a trainer from The Art of Learning in New Zealand, will host an open seminar for educators on February 5 at Warwick Academy, plus an open seminar for parents on February 12. He will also conduct training sessions at Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School, Saltus, Somersfield Academy and Warwick Academy.

However, two days of training with the Bermuda Educators Council had to be called off due to cuts in Government funding.

Mr King said: “We'd been hoping to do a couple of days with the Bermuda Educators Council on February 12 and 13, but we had a late call that due to unexpected budget cuts they had to cancel it. The woman I spoke to was most apologetic. It's unfortunate because it had been set up long enough for me to set up resources for the course. But I'm going to leave my material here and hopefully we can do it next year.”

He said his method is based on teaching people how to become “resilient learners”.

“I've always been fascinated by how some kids can study better than others. I've found that being able to focus on learning is based on skills that can be taught.”

After three years of courses with Warwick Academy and then Bermuda High School, Mr King and his assistant Wayne Prince will give courses around the Island, with two public sessions sponsored in part by Lancashire Group.

Mr King can be reached at taolearn[AT]xtra.co.nz.
