THE JOB with BELINDA CLARKE
Age: 37
Role: Trust manager, Codan Trust
What is your job? Trust Manager. I am also a qualified Bermuda attorney. I am responsible for a complex portfolio of accounts to manage the needs of the principals and beneficiaries, with particular attention to the terms of the trust instruments and company bye-laws, trust and company law as well as internal policies and procedures. I manage a diversified basket of trust assets and liaise very closely with my clients, beneficiaries, co-trustees, accountants, lawyers and investment managers as well as monitor and control the performance of third party providers of investment, custodial, accounting and other related services. I manage a team of administrative staff by providing advice, guidance and support in handling the accounts. I monitor the team profitability and productivity.
What is your favourite part? Liaising with people. I enjoy meeting with my clients and colleagues and working through issues to find solutions. I enjoy the client presentation preparation and getting to know exactly what my clients’ family needs are. The travel aspect is great also. I have seen a few new parts of the world as a result of my work. I enjoy working with my team members and assisting them to gain understanding of a new concept and structure. It is gratifying when I can see the “penny has dropped” for a newcomer to the industry.
What is your least favourite part? Chasing invoices.
What is your most interesting experience at work? Working with a few high net worth families and learning about the operation of a yacht chartering business and the purchase of artwork. Even more interesting is seeing the operation of family dynamics in planning for future generations and decision making in family-owned businesses and how this is affected by wealth and culture.
What would you be doing otherwise? I would be an exotic animal doctor or scientist.
