Linfield soar into Goodwill lead
Linfield National GC, led by professional John Allen and with amateurs Bruce Eckert, Jim Talbot and Dick Boothby making up the team, jumped into the net lead at the Goodwill tournament yesterday, taking full advantage of ideal conditions at Riddell’s Bay in the second round.
They carded a nine-under 61 to go along with a first round 64, leaving them at 16-under (125).
In second place are the team of Woodland GC A’ from Massachusetts (pro Ted Griffin and amateurs Joe Sweeney, Bob Franchi and Ken Lorey) after they added a 10-under par at Riddell’s Bay to their first day five-under moving them to 126 overall.
Gross division leaders are The National Golf Club of Canada ‘B’ with professional Keir Smith getting a helping hand from amateurs Paul Policaro, Michael Fiorini and Danny Smardenka.
They hold a slim one-shot lead after shooting a two-under 69 at Port Royal, taking their two round total to 133.
In second place at six-under 135 overall are Linfield National GC (pro John Allen, Bruce Eckert, Jim Talbot and Dick Boothby). They posted a three-under 67 at Riddell’s Bay. Third place on five-under are Longmeadow.
Port Royal crept up the leaderboard and are in fourth place after they returned an impressive five-under.
In the senior net division, Lambton’s ‘C’ are on top as pro Matthew Yustin and amateurs Mark Keuleman, Mark McCallum and Tim Macklaier recorded a remarkable 14-under at Port Royal normally the toughest course in the event giving them a two-day total of 24-under-par, 117. In second place are Sharon CC (Fran Dzwilewski, Peter Smith, Dick Moarse and J.P.Jones) after they also tore apart Port Royal with an 11-under 60 giving them a two-day total of 22 under (119). The CC of Salt Lake ‘B’ are within striking distance in third place at 123.
The senior gross division sees the Canadian team of Lambton ‘C’ with a four-shot thanks to pro Matthew Yustin and amateurs Mark Keuleman, Mark Mccallum and Tim Macklaier combining to post a four-under at Port Royal. They’re five under on 136. In second place on 140 are CC of Salt Lake ‘A’.
Leading the ladies net group are Toronto GC where professional Johnalee Marshall and amateurs Patty Fischer, Kathi Tedford and Carole Pigot improved on their first round by adding a superb nine-under 62, three shots clear of Lambton (10-under 131).
Riddell’s Bay ladies are ahead in the gross division after firing an even-par 71 to put them at seven over (148) after two days, tied with Toronto GC who managed a one-over 72. Both teams played at Port Royal. Riddell’s Bay are led by Susan Bond with amateurs Kathy-Lloyd Hines, Gladys Chambaz and Tracy Burgess supporting.
In the junior profession event, Linfield’s John Allen added 19 points to his first round 17 and took the lead by two shots over Keir Smith from National GC of Canada. Local pro Pearman is on 33 points after collecting 14 points at Riddell’s Bay.
Matthew Yustin leads the senior pros on 31 points and Wendy Shackelton from London Hunt & CC is on top spot with 23 points.
Today is a rest day in the 72-hole tournament. The teams return tomorrow at Mid Ocean Club and Beklmont Hills.
