Rehab and education key to solving crime, OBA
Rehabilitation in prisons and better education from a young age were the One Bermuda Alliance's top two suggestions for breaking the Island's cycle of crime at an open forum this evening.
The failings of the public school system leaves many young men unable to get jobs and turning to a life of crime, members said at the ideas-sharing event at the Seventh-day Adventist building on King Street.
The problem is compounded when they waste years in prison without learning skills to get respectable jobs, according to members.
About 50 OBA supporters took part in brainstorming sessions on crime, education and the economy to help formulate the Alliance's general election platform.
Leader and Shadow National Security Minister Craig Cannonier summarised the thoughts shared in the crime debate: “We need a co-ordinated approach to crime that includes a foundation of education, education, education.”
