Business Bermuda hosts Black History Month seminar

Business Bermuda Local Awareness Committee hosted its second Annual Black History Month Seminar last week featuring Dr Clarence Maxwell who presented on Bermuda’s black sea-faring culture of piracy and trade during the age of revolution.

According to the organisation, Part II of Dr Maxwell’s presentation described how even in bondage Bermudian slaves were ambitious venture capitalists finding ways tostockpile wealth and goods without the knowledge of their masters.

“Dr Maxwell’s presentation was incredibly popular last year, and we are glad that he was able to return this year to present his research on Bermuda’s maritime culture of the 17th and 18th centuries,” said Cheryl Packwood, CEO of Business Bermuda. “This fascinating, and little known era is indicative of the type of society that Bermuda would become, and by understanding the history of our economic culture, we can hope to find solutions for our current challenges.”

Kristin Chambliss, who attended the presentation, had this to say: “Dr Maxwell gave an informative talk on the unique position of enslaved black sailors who were able to carve out their niche in the global economy. It was an interesting take on Black History, which can often focus on the same familiar characters.”
