Bermuda’s newest upscale restaurant, Red Steakhouse and Bar, celebrated its grand opening last night.

Red has been open quietly for a week and owners David Madeiros and Rick Olson said yesterday “it’s gotten busier and busier” and they’ve already had some repeat customers.

“We are very happy with the response so far,” Mr Olson said. “Customers are complimenting us on the food and the quality of our steaks. That’s good to hear in the first week.”

They plan to start opening for lunch hopefully next week, he said.

Red is in the former Silk restaurant space and Mr Olson said despite the economy he believes there is still a market for a high-end cocktail bar and dining option.

Mr Olson is no stranger to betting on bold ventures.

At his other restaurant, Bermuda Bistro at the Beach, Mr Olson introduced a number of profitable gaming machines that were banned by Government in 2004.

However, he relocated the machines to Turks and Caicos where he owns Carib Gaming, employing 10 people and dozens more in the bars and parlours where the machines are located.

Mr Olson, who has established many other successful restaurants, is also an investor-developer in a five-star TCI condo hotel resort, the luxury Gansevoort Wymara. He and his partners bought the land and developed the resort.

His latest venture with partner David Madeiros is located on Front Street overlooking the harbour and boasts Hamilton’s “largest outdoor patio”.

Designed by architect Jason Jones, a Red spokesperson says guests “will be welcomed to an old world charm, meets new world dining atmosphere”.

Red’s dining options include the classic steakhouse dining room, a chic lounge, VIP balcony seating and contemporary outdoor patio.

On the menu is “a world class selection of Certified Angus Prime Steaks and local seafood, wine and service ... The real specialities of this steakhouse are the perfectly prepared Certified Angus Beef cuts which feature Filet Mignon, Strip, Rib eye, Porterhouse and Cowboy, all offered in their natural juices. The Executive Chef will also prepare a selection of traditional and internationally inspired spices and rubs.

“Other distinguished dishes will include organic chicken, lamb, veal, local lobster and seafood as well as unique vegetarian options. Pairing these perfectly prepared steak and seafood options with signature side dishes and selected speciality wines means that there’s an inspired dish for everyone.”

The Red Lounge offers guests a signature cocktail and bar menu including an array of artisan cheeses and desserts.

There is a variety of “well-valued” wines by the bottle and over 20 wines available by the glass.

“The Red Bar and Lounge is an ideal place for midafternoon refreshments or an après-dinner aperitif,” the spokesperson said.

“Additionally, it will remain open past 10pm for that perfect after-dinner venue to enjoy an assortment of cheeses, desserts, nightcaps and seasonal entertainment.”

Red has Wi-Fi internet and designated areas for a DJ and live entertainment.

It has a wheelchair accessible entrance on Reid Street.
