The City of Hamilton is considering placing solar panels at Bulls Head car park.

A request for proposals from suppliers interested in designing and installing a grid-connected photovoltaic system, was published in yesterday’s The Royal Gazette.

The advertisement asked vendors to supply two proposals one in which the Corporation would own the panels and another in which the vendor owned and maintained the panels to create a return-on-investment.

Interested parties were asked to submit their proposals by 4pm on January 31.

Deputy Mayor and chairman of the City’s Development Infrastructure and Future’s Committee Donal Smith said the Corporation wants to be proactive in adopting solar technology.

“We do know there is a lot of talk in the paper about companies going solar,” he said. “We have heard a lot from people like Greenrock and BEST.

“With all of that, we felt it was best to be proactive and take a look at what’s really out there and how it can help do something positive. We think solar is the way to go and we want to be proactive.”

Regarding the specific location and scale of the project, Mr Smith said the city wants to hear from industry experts about the most effective strategy.

“That’s all on the table. We have an idea, but we want to hear what the experts say and what they come up with as the best way forward,” he said.

“We, the counsel, will take a serious look at it and see if we can help not only improve the bottom line of the Corporation of Hamilton, but also what we can do for the green initiative.”

The news was welcomed by Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce Chairman Stuart Hayward.

He said that solar heating and photovoltaic panels should be required in all new commercial developments, and that further incentives should be provided for new residential buildings to adopt the technology.
