Documentary film, ‘The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne’, is about to make Bermuda Documentary Film Festival history.

For the first time ever, the film festival will be screening the popular documentary for a fifth time in the Tradewinds Auditorium of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on Saturday at 3pm. Four previous screenings of the film have sold out.

The film tells the story of Doris Payne, a glamorous and charismatic 82-year-old international jewel thief, who uncovers the secrets of her trade and what drove her to a 60-year life of crime.

Ms Payne retraces her steps — through Paris, Monte Carlo, Tokyo, Miami and New York — telling how she managed to jet-set her way into any Cartier or Tiffany’s, and emerge with a small fortune.

Festival director Duncan Hall said the success of the film came down to its “clever and highly entertaining look at a very complex individual”.

He said: “[Doris can be described as] someone who is glamorous, charismatic and likeable despite her faults. At the same time, the film has a lot of humorous moments — people leave the cinema smiling and laughing — and so the film makes for a great afternoon out.”
