Last chance to qualify for Carifta

Washington and Moore were among the medallists at last year's Carifta Games in Jamaica

Bermuda’s junior swimmers will have one more opportunity to qualify for the Carifta Swimming Championships during Saturday’s opening meet of the Best of the Best Series at Saltus Grammar School.

The Best of the Best event starts at 8.30am and is to be immediately followed by a development meet to begin at noon.

“Even though this meet is still early in our competition season for 2014, it is a significant meet for many of our young swimmers,” said Ben Smith, the national swimming coach.

“This will be the last qualifying meet for this year’s Carifta Swimming Championships.

“We have two swimmers that have one qualifying time and simply need to reach their second time, while we have others that are extremely close in several events.

“After this meet is complete, we will start the process of selecting the team and should have an announcement by the end of next week.”

Smith added: “For some there will be the added pressure and excitement of qualification, while others will continue to work on improving their swims in preparation for this year’s major meets.

“We will also see all the other swimmers that will be looking for personal best times and to show the improvement in their swimming honed over so many hours in the cold and rainy wintry months.

“The Best of Best Shipping meet will be followed with another development meet where the young swimmers get their chance to race.”

The Carifta Championships will be held in Aruba at a date yet to be announced. Bermuda captured seven medals, including three gold, and established 18 national records and 63 personal bests at last year’s championships held in Kingston, Jamaica.
