An inquiry into a $300,000 campaign donation by a group of wealthy US businessmen to an OBA-linked group is set to be released within the next few days, the party chairman said.

The investigation into the donation by US tycoon Nathan Landow and associates in the run-up to the 2012 General Election was launched in May, just before Craig Cannonier resigned as Premier amid controversy over a trip on Mr Landow’s private jet to visit the multimillionaire in Washington in March 2013.

Mr Cannonier, with then-Attorney General Marc Pettingill, Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell and Stephen DaCosta, a business associate of Mr Cannonier, met Mr Landow to discuss potential investment in Bermuda.

Thad Hollis, who is carrying out the inquiry, said yesterday: “I’m trying to pull it together — I’m getting things finalised and making sure the facts are correct. I want to share it with the party executive, so it should be released within a week.”

More than a year after the OBA trio’s trip, it emerged Mr Landow and other US businessmen had donated cash to the OBA-linked Bermuda Political Action Club (BPAC) for “grassroots” campaign work.

OBA political consultant Derrick Green and Mr DaCosta were the signatories to the Bank of Butterfield account holding the cash.

Mr Hollis, however, said the party had never received the cash, and in mid-May pledged to investigate the donation.

Mr Cannonier, who denied any wrongdoing, resigned a few days later and was replaced as Premier by Michael Dunkley, who had been Deputy Premier and Minister of National Security.

Mr Dunkley said when he took over as leader on Monday, May 19 that he expected the results of the investigation to be released in around a week.

Mr Green, who has offices in Maryland, told The Royal Gazette last month that he could not comment until the inquiry results were made public, while Mr DaCosta has maintained his silence over the BPAC.
