Thompson’s BAA target promotion push

BAA director of football Kenny Thompson

BAA Wanderers are capable of making a successful push for promotion this season, said Kenny Thompson, the team’s coach.

BAA begin their campaign tonight at Devonshire Rec when they take on Wolves, who were relegated from the Premier Division last season.

The match will have added interest as BAA picked up several Wolves players during the off season.

Five players moved to BAA from Wolves, including Anthony Hunter and Troy Tucker, who are both presently abroad in school along with one of BAA’s top youngsters last season, Calon Minors, who has enrolled at the University of South Carolina.

Thompson hopes that his new signings will bring something extra to BAA.

“It’s a very competitive division, our team is generally on the younger side of things and we like it this way,” said Thompson, who is embarking on his fifth season as BAA’s director of football.

“I think this season, like last season, will be competitive,” Thompson said.

Wolves, under the stewardship of new coach Tori Davis, were one of the hardest hit in the transfer period, losing 13 players, including Mike Williams back to PHC, Shaki Pearman and Derrick Brangman to Devonshire Cougars and Martez Laws and Vincent Minors to Flanagan’s Onions.

“We’re going to play a match and of course it might take on added significance for some players, playing against their former team,” Thompson said.

Cougars will play Onions in tonight’s second match, both teams having already played in the Dudley Eve, where Cougars were beaten for the second semi-final spot by Onions on goal difference. The teams drew 2-2 draw in their meeting.

Sunday’s match between PHC Zebras and Southampton Rangers has been postponed because of the funeral of Shijuan Mungal, who was a member of PHC.

The match has been rescheduled for Monday at Devonshire Rec at 8pm.
